If you've crocheted a few simple items, such as dishcloths, and want to make an easy and fun slouchy hat (or messy bun hat) and learn some additional crochet stitches and techniques, then this is the class for you! In this class, we'll use the provided pattern as a template for creating a textured spiral hat or messy bun headband, in any size you wish. The hat is worked flat, using a unique trapezoid construction method, and seamed at the end. You'll learn how to increase and decrease stitches, how to work through the back loop of a stitch, and how to do a crochet slip stitch to quickly and easily seam your hat.
Some experience required
; students must be comfortable doing chain and dc stitches; these will NOT be taught in class.
$35 (includes $5 registration/pattern fee and $30 instructor fee, which is to be paid directly at time of class). NOTE: Class has a 3-student minimum
Lecture, hands-on demonstration, and project. Note: students will not finish their hat during class, but will be shown in class how to finish it on their own.
- One skein or ball of DK or worsted weight yarn in wool, acrylic or wool/acrylic blend (yarns with plant fiber or alpaca not recommended as hat will stretch when worn) for an adult-sized hat. For baby hat, one ball of sport yarn. Multi-color hat was crocheted using one ball of Euro Baby Fair Isle yarn, which is a superwash wool/nylon blend.
- A crochet hook sized to the yarn you've chosen; Sonya strongly recommends doing a double crochet swatch before class with a hook size(s) recommended for your chosen yarn to produce a dense, somewhat firm fabric - feel free to bring the swatch(s) to class if you need help deciding on the best hook to use.
